JUNIOR PROGRAMS

Junior golfers are the future of our sport

GST offers a range of opportunities for juniors to get into golf, obtain a handicap and play socially or competitively

Sunday Junior League

Where: Various courses (notified by email / FaceBook or check the Calendar)

For more information and to register interest: contact Liz Anderson on 0419 036 130 or email [email protected]

9-hole stroke is a low-stress way for children to get into competition golf, with a “pick up after 10 shots” rule

6-hole Ambrose is organised in groups of 2 (or 3 if there’s an odd number) and is perfect for newer players. The holes are shortened (usually < 180 m) and children play in a team to complete the hole. This format offers a supportive way to build golf skills.

Callaway Junior Summer Series

This series is played in Oct/Nov/Dec each year involving three rounds hosted by different courses. Playing three layouts allows the participating juniors to test themselves in different playing conditions.

The play includes 18-hole and 9-hole competitions, plus a shortened 6-hole option for beginners. This format allows younger golfers to be exposed to more experienced junior players.

Prizes awarded include the best gross (aggregate over 3 18-hole rounds) and the best nett (best 2 of the 3 18-hole scores).

Callaway has naming rights and is a generous supporter of GST Junior Programs.

Big 4 Showdown (Oatlands Golf Club)

Each year in May, the Big 4 Showdown brings together juniors from across the state for a day of fun team golf. The teams are arranged so players are grouped with girls and boys they wouldn’t normally play with.

The Showdown is focused on fun, team spirit, inclusion of young players and fostering connections and friendships across the state.

There are 4 teams in total, each named after a familiar golfing brand. The team captains set the pairings and playing order.

The day includes 3 different matchplay rounds of 7 holes: Canadian foursomes, 2-person ambrose and captains pick singles.

In previous years, GST has been extremely grateful for support provided by Titleist, Callaway, Srixon, PING, and TaylorMade.

Mid-Winter Youth Classic (Greens Beach Golf Club)

This 2-day event, held at the stunning Greens Beach layout, is open to juniors and colts, allowing the colts (up to age 24) to retain connections to (older) juniors and to compete against other colts from atound the state.

Day 1 – SATURDAY
A stroke competition with prizes for gross and nett prizes. Some chipping and putting activities in the afternoon are followed by the GLOW IN THE DARK nearest the pin competition.

Following an evening presentation, the players with the best 8 gross scores become team captains for Day 2. Each captain chooses one other player for their team. The rest of the players are allocated across the teams to balance handicaps fairly.

Day 2 – SUNDAY
Another stroke competition is played in teams. On each hole, the 2 best nett scores for each team are recorded to contribute to the total team score.

  • Day 2 Stroke Competition
  • Aggregate winners (across the two days)
  • Winning teams

Eligibility: Open to young golfers who are under 24 at 1 Jan in the year of the event.

North vs South

Each year, GST forms a North vs South Squad in preparation for four matches against a team from the north of the State. These matches are generally played in the April (2 matches) and October (2 matches) school holidays and take the form of (pennant-style) matchplay.

Players are selected for the squad based on performance in GST competitions (e.g., Southern Open) and other 18-hole events. Squad members are expected to attend after-school practices in the weeks before the matches. Squad members who are not chosen for a particular tie are expected to be available to caddy for another team member.
