16-18 November 2024

BAILEY AND BARR CROWNED CHAMPIONS

Qualifying – 36 holes stroke

Congratulations to all members from Golf Southern Tas Clubs who made the trip up to Riverside Golf Club to play in our State Amateur Championship.    19 members of Golf Southern Tasmania competed against a strong field that included 9 players who travelled from interstate.

Friday saw the field play in the 36 hole qualifying rounds.  In the Women’s event young guns, Billie and Jessie Richmond qualified 2nd and 3rd while Sally Miller, Audrey Long and Sim Ram performed well.  2024 Tasmanian Open Champion, Jorjah Bailey, from Launceston Golf Club qualified in the number one spot after a 5 under total which included a scintillating 7 under, 66 in round 1.

In the Men’s division, Max Coventry from Tasmania Golf Club qualified 6th after impressive rounds of 70 and 73 (-1), Eli Monaghan recovered from a disappointing opening round 79 to shoot 70 in the afternoon and qualify 13th.  They were joined in the Matchplay by Edison Lee (+8) who took the final qualifying spot.

 Matchplay

Saturday morning saw Billie take on Jessie in the battle of the Richmonds.  Jessie ultimately taking out the entertaining match with a hard fought 3&2 victory.  On to the final Jessie went to take on the might of the Tasmanian Open Champion, Jorjah Bailey.

A great experience and strong showing from one of our up-and-coming stars finished with Bailey taking a 5&4 victory and another trophy to add to her growing cabinet.

In the handicap match play, Tasmania Golf Club’s Audrey Long put up a great fight to make the final before going down to Launceston’s Kirri Piper.

In the men’s, all three of our qualifiers faced high quality interstate players in round 1.  Monaghan continued his resurgence after round 1 to take out Alexander Yap comfortably (4&2).  Coventry and Lee will take great experience from their battles but were unable to halt the charge of the ‘interstaters’ going down to Malachy Marshall (SA) and Taylor Barr (QLD) respectively.

In the quarters, Monaghan took on reigning Toogood Trophy winner Jonty Lunson.  The two state players went toe to toe before Monaghan closed out the match 5&3.  A semi-final against the number 1 seed Taylor Barr was the reward.  The Queenslander finally stopping the surging Monaghan 3&2.  A top 4 finish in our State Amateur Championships another great achievement.

In the final, Barr took out Marshalle 4&3 to take out the title.

In the Men’s handicap match play,  Royal Hobart GC’s Oliver Barrett had a storming run all the way to the final where he met Prospect Vale’s Josh Milich.  A close tussle ensued before Barrett went down by the slimmest of margins, 1down.  A great performance indeed.

Entries are open for the Northern Amateur Championships on December 8 at Riverside, while the next major open event in Southern Tas is the KBGC Summer Cup at Kingston Beach Golf Club on 15th December.
